Strategic IP advisor with broad experience in electronics, information and communications technology
Steve Martin is a Principal in the firm’s Toronto office. Steve provides strategic intellectual property advice on IP filing strategies, IP portfolio management, trade secrets, IP agreements and licensing, and monetization. His practice is focused on patent prosecution, including drafting patent and industrial design (design patent) applications, IP strategy, and providing patentability, infringement, validity and freedom to operate opinions.
Steve works with domestic innovators in building their international IP portfolios and assists foreign innovators with obtaining patent protection in Canada. Steve works with clients in traditional electronics, information and communications technology (EICT) industries as well as non-traditional EICT industries such as agriculture, automotive, cannabis, chemical, healthcare, oil & gas, manufacturing, mining machinery and power generation. His clients range from start-ups to multinational corporations.
Steve has experience in a wide range of EICT technologies including artificial intelligence and machine learning, autonomous vehicles, biometrics, blockchain technology, cryptography, communications and messaging infrastructure, data analytics including web analytics, data management including social media and web platform management, data security and user authentication, media encoding, financial technology, medical imaging, robotics, sensors, and user interfaces.
Steve’s interests include astronomy and photography. He is an avid cyclist and skier, and enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and three daughters.
