With a combined background in chemistry and visual biomedical communication design, Andrea possesses a thorough understanding of the science underlying her clients’ technological innovations and keeps abreast of the evolving regulatory and patent landscape to ensure clients achieve their business objectives.
A conscientious patent lawyer and agent
Andrea’s practice focuses on chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology patents, and includes the drafting and prosecution of such patents. She provides opinions and conducts due diligence for her clients, which include academic institutions, research hospitals, start-ups and independent inventors across Canada. She also services large corporations and other patent agents in Canada and around the world working in industries like energy, oil and gas, cannabis, food and beverage, agricultural sciences, medical devices and nanotechnology.
A history of excellence and engagement in the sciences
Andrea was a postdoctoral fellow at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany where her research centered on organometallic catalysis. As a graduate student at the University of Toronto, she undertook research in the fields of inorganic, organometallic, materials, and polymer chemistry. Andrea was a lead author for articles published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Advanced Materials, and Organometallics. She has also spoken at the Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition and the American Chemical Society (ACS) National Meeting. She remains engaged with the chemical community including with mentorship and career-related initiatives.
Prior to joining Smart & Biggar, Andrea practiced at an intellectual property boutique then spent time in-house, managing the patent portfolio of a leading research hospital network.
