Strategic patent protection with engineering expertise

With a background in engineering, Udai remains engaged in the fields of technology and innovation through IP law. His practice focuses on mechanical and electrical engineering patent prosecution. He believes the best client solutions come from developing a thorough understanding of their needs to apply strategic services that maximize the value of their IP.

Udai earned valuable experience working as a Law Clerk at the Federal Court and was involved in many IP decisions (2022-2023). While working at the Court, he assisted both the Federal Court Technology Committee and the Intellectual Property Bar Liaison Committee.

During his legal studies, Udai was actively involved in both legal courses and IP law moot. He received the Hon. Justice Grant Burnyeat Award in Law (2019-2020) and the Legal Leaders for Diversity Trust Fund Scholarship (2020), awarded for academic merit and leadership skills as well as the J.S.D. Tory Prize for Advocacy (2021) in the competitive moot program. He was also awarded the Blake Cassels & Graydon LLP Prize for outstanding achievement in Corporate Transactions (2022). Udai worked as a Student Caseworker with the UBC Innocence Project, an Assistant Editor of the UBC Law Review, and as a Research Assistant to Professor Wei Cui in the field of International Taxation.

Before joining Smart & Biggar as an Associate, Udai was an articling student in our Vancouver office.
