Smart & Biggar welcomes nine new associates and counsel in Patents, Trademark, Litigation and IP Counselling across Canada

Smart & Biggar is pleased to welcome nine new professionals to our firm, adding to the depth and breadth of our practice groups across Canada. 

The additions include hire backs of associates who have articled with the firm, as well as seasoned professionals from Canada and the US who bring proven expertise to our clients in the areas of Patents, Trademarks, Litigation and IP counselling and strategy.

The following three associates have been hired back following their articles and call to the bar:

Matthew Burt joins our Ottawa office as an associate. Matthew’s practice focuses on intellectual property litigation. Matthew holds a B.Sc. Hons. from Queen’s University and a M.Sc. (Cellular and Molecular Medicine) and J.D. (summa cum laude) from the University of Ottawa. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2017.

Ahmed ElDessouki joins our Toronto office as an associate. His practice focuses on assisting his clients in obtaining patent protection. Ahmed holds a B.Eng. (Electrical Engineering) from McGill University and a J.D. from the University of Toronto. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2017.

Katie Lee also joins our Toronto office as an associate. She practices intellectual property litigation, with a focus on the life sciences field. Katie holds a B.Sc. Hons. (Biology) and a J.D. from Queen’s University. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2017.

The following associates & counsel have recently joined our Patents, Trademarks and Litigation teams:

Ottawa:

Jamie-Lynn Kraft has joined our Ottawa office as an associate in our Trademarks practice. Her practice includes trademark counselling throughout the trademark lifecycle, including clearance, prosecution, opposition and enforcement. Jamie-Lynn holds a B.A. Hons. (Economics and Political Studies) from Queen's University and a J.D from Dalhousie University. Before joining the firm, Jamie-Lynn worked at another Canadian IP firm.

Bryce Dorin has joined our Ottawa office as an associate in our Patent practice. Bryce’s practice focuses on the preparation and acquisition of patent protection. He holds a B.A.Sc. (Engineering Physics) from Queen’s University, a M.A.Sc. (Silicon Photonics) from Carleton University and a Ph.D. (Laser Instrumentation) from The University of Manchester. Bryce worked with a large academic institution in their IP department, prior to joining the firm.

Montreal:

Joshua Neubarth joined our Montreal office earlier this year as an associate. His practice focuses on intellectual property litigation in the areas of copyright & media, trademarks and patents. Joshua holds a LL.B. from the University of Montreal, a J.D. from Osgoode Hall Law School and a LL.M. (Entertainment, Media, and Intellectual Property Law) from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to joining Smart & Biggar, Joshua worked with in-house counsel at a music rights administration and licensing service, as well as, at a Hollywood motion picture and television production company.

Camille Lachance Gaboury has joined our Montreal office as an associate in our Litigation practice. Her litigation practice focuses on all areas of intellectual property law, including trademarks, patents and copyrights. Camille holds a M.Sc. and a LL.B. from the University of Sherbrooke. Before joining the firm, Camille worked as a Judicial Law Clerk to a Federal Court of Appeal Judge.

Jean-Christophe Paquette has joined our Montreal office as a technical consultant. His practice focusses on patent drafting and procurement leveraging his expertise in mechanical, industrial and bio engineering. He also advises clients on issues relating to patentability, patent validity and infringement. Jean-Christophe holds a B.A.Sc. (Mechanical Engineering) from the University of Sherbrooke.

Calgary:

Robert Holthus has joined our Calgary office as counsel. His practice is focussed on developing and implementing intellectual property strategies for clients across various industries. Robert holds a B.Sc. (Chemistry, magna cum laude) from Winona State University, a M.S. (Chemical Engineering) from Texas A&M University and a J.D. (summa cum laude) from Capital University Law School. He was called to the Minnesota State Bar in 2001, the Texas State Bar in 2003 and he is a registered Patent and Trademark Agent in the United States. Prior to joining the firm, Robert practiced intellectual property law with several U.S. based firms.
