Smart & Biggar welcomes Associate Nicole Laberge to our Toronto office

Smart & Biggar is pleased to welcome Nicole Laberge to our Toronto office.

Nicole joins our Life Sciences and Chem/Bio team as an associate. With a background in chemistry, Nicole’s practice focuses on patent drafting and prosecution in the biotechnology, chemical and pharmaceutical fields. She will work alongside IP leaders in the life sciences practice area to assist clients in protecting their innovations and enforcing their IP.

Nicole’s interest in IP law is rooted in her extensive scientific training. She earned an M.Sc. in synthetic organic chemistry from the University of British Columbia in 2015 before working as a Research Associate at a private research institute in Pasadena, California, and at a life sciences start-up in Culver City, California. In 2022, Nicole earned her J.D. from the University of Windsor, during which she earned valuable experience as a summer student at a leading IP boutique and later completed her articling term there. Nicole further broadened her legal experience as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honourable Justice Angela Furlanetto at the Federal Court of Canada in Ottawa.

Nicole has experience working with diverse clients, including start-ups, SMEs, universities and multinational companies. Using a dedicated and flexible approach, Nicole endeavours to gain a deeper understanding of her clients’ goals and how they align with their IP. She simplifies the complexities of IP law to present the most effective and efficient solutions.

Please join us in welcoming Nicole to Smart & Biggar!
