Smart & Biggar tops Managing IP’s 2021 patent firm rankings

Smart & Biggar is pleased to share that Managing IP (MIP) has released the 2021 patent firm rankings and has once again listed Smart & Biggar as a Tier 1 firm for both Patent Contentious and Patent Prosecution practices. In June 2021, MIP also released the 2021 firm rankings for Trademarks, with Smart & Biggar topping the charts for both contentious and non-contentious trademark work.

MIP researchers describe Smart & Biggar as a “firm [that] consistently delivers for clients in both patent protection and patent disputes work”. Additionally, MIP named 11 partners as ‘2021 IP Stars’ in patents and featured 6 lawyers and agents as ‘Notable Practitioners’ for their expertise and status in the field of patents and related work.

Given special mention in MIP’s editorial review for patent prosecution are Elliott Simcoe and Matthew Zischka who were noted as “senior patent agents [well known] for filing and prosecution work” in the electrical, computer and mechanical field, alongside Allan Brett and Stephan Georgiev, while Christine Genge (notable) is mentioned for her ‘deep knowledge in [industrial] design law and practice’. In the life sciences field, Daphne Lainson, Chris Robinson (notable) and David Schwartz are also featured as ‘notable senior patent agents for filing and prosecution’.

For patent litigation, Steven Garland and Jeremy Want are lauded as “prominent practitioners”, while Yoon Kang and Sheldon Hamilton were lauded as ‘prominent practitioners’ in pharmaceutical litigation alongside Nancy Pei and Gunars Gaikis (notable). Abigail Smith and Lynn Ing are identified as future IP Stars for patent litigation, patent strategy and patent prosecution in Life Sciences, while Alice Tseng (notable) is featured for related Regulatory work.

Earlier this year, Smart & Biggar proudly received honours in four award categories at the MIP North America Awards, including “IP Boutique Firm of the Year” and “Patent Prosecution Firm of the Year” for Canada. The firm was also awarded “Canadian Impact Case of the Year” for our successful representation in Nova Chemicals Corporation v Dow Chemicals Company. Steven Garland, who was successful lead counsel for Dow Chemicals, was named Canada’s “Outstanding Practitioner of the Year” for patents.
