Smart & Biggar named a Top IP Boutique Firm in Canada for 2022-2023
Smart & Biggar is proud to announce that Canadian Lawyer has named the firm in their list of Top Intellectual Property Boutiques in Canada for 2022-2023.
In a special feature, Canadian Lawyer noted that Smart & Biggar is Canada’s largest IP boutique, and one of the oldest, with a history spanning over 130 years. Editors of the guide highlight that the firm “handles more patent and trademark applications combined that are filed with the Canadian intellectual office each year than any other boutique firm.” Smart & Biggar is also a leader in the Canadian marketplace for IP enforcement, “with a third of the firm’s practice focused on complex IP-related litigation” and while pharmaceutical IP litigation makes up a significant part “the firm uniquely handle the full spectrum of IP litigation involving patents, trademarks, and copyrights”.

The Top IP Boutiques series was first launched by Canadian Lawyer in 2016. To determine the top IP boutiques, lawyers, in-house counsel and clients from across Canada voted on the top intellectual property boutiques in the country. To be included, firms were required to derive the majority of their work from intellectual property law. Canadian Lawyer received over 300 votes, where respondents ranked firms based on “regional service coverage, client base, notable mandates, service excellence and legal expertise.”
