Canada’s Intellectual Property Firm

Smart & Biggar expands Montreal team and welcomes Julia Schur and Francesca Roy

Smart & Biggar is pleased to welcome associate Julia Schur and articling student Francesca Roy to our growing team in Montreal. Julia and Francesca both join Smart & Biggar with impressive academic backgrounds, cross-border experience, and a passion for intellectual property law.

Julia Schur comes to Smart & Biggar as a U.S. attorney (Massachusetts), and brings to the firm her experience at the intersection of IP law and technology.  Julia completed her Juris Doctor at the Boston University School of Law where she joined the Boston University/MIT technology clinic as a student attorney. In this role she advised cutting edge start-ups on matters ranging from regulatory compliance to trademark law, copyright and data privacy.

Julia was born and raised in Paris, France and completed her International Baccaloreat diploma before continuing her studies in the U.S. at the prestigious Sarah Lawrence College in New York state. She earned an undergraduate degree in journalism and political science

Francesca Roy joins Smart & Biggar as an articling student. Over the next few months Francesca will work alongside partners and associates on IP’s most complex and important legal matters in a team-based environment.

Francesca holds a Bachelor of Laws degree at the University of Montreal and a Master's degree in literature from the University of Paris VIII.  While at law school, she worked as a research assistant for professor Ysolde Gendreau, and volunteered with the Pro Bono Students Canada organization for The Montreal Artists-Entrepreneurs Association (ARTENA)’s legal service. Prior to beginning her legal studies, Francesca was a rights and contracts coordinator for a literary book publisher in Montreal. She was also a member of the Association nationale des éditeurs de livres (ANEL)’s copyright committee from 2015 to 2018.

We welcome Julia and Francesca and wish them a great start to their careers at Smart & Biggar.
