Smart & Biggar is pleased to announce the promotion of six new Principals to the firm, in recognition of their extensive expertise and outstanding service to clients, leading the way in intellectual property services in Canada.
Representing all practice areas of the firm and our offices across Canada, we are delighted to congratulate Andrea Berenbaum (Patents & Life Sciences, Vancouver), Ryan Evans (Litigation, Toronto), Lionel Fishman (Patents & Industrial Designs, Ottawa), Jamie-Lynn Kraft (Trademarks, Ottawa), Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie (Litigation, Montréal) and Kwan Loh (Trademarks, Vancouver).

Andrea Berenbaum is an experienced lawyer and patent agent with a practice focused on chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology patents, and includes the drafting and prosecution of such patents. With a combined background in chemistry and visual biomedical communication design, Andrea possesses a thorough understanding of the science underlying her clients’ technological innovations and considers the evolving regulatory and patent landscape to ensure clients achieve their business objectives. Andrea applies the knowledge and experience she gained while working in the laboratories of leading academic researchers to assist clients with their innovations.
Ryan Evans is a skilled trademark lawyer and IP litigator. He is a registered trademark agent and expert in complex infringement disputes. Whether providing strategic risk-management advice, conducting investigations, or appearing in Court, Ryan is known for deeply understanding his clients’ needs and objectives and being responsive to them. He takes a practical approach, working to streamline proceedings and minimize work on the part of the client, where possible, while ensuring that the best possible case is put forward and that clients understand the impacts of each decision along the way.
Lionel Fishman is a seasoned lawyer and patent agent with a diverse range technical expertise. Informed by his varied engineering experience and legal training, Lionel offers practical and strategic counsel on all issues related to developing, securing, utilizing and enforcing intellectual property rights, with a particular focus on patent and design rights. Drawing on his technical expertise, he advises Canadian companies of all sizes and from a wide range of sectors, assisting them in extracting the maximum value from their inventions and novel designs.
Jamie-Lynn Kraft is a highly experienced lawyer and trademark agent whose counsel extends beyond protecting brand owners’ valuable IP assets. With a passion for helping businesses grow, Jamie-Lynn advises her clients on strategies to harness the full potential of their brands. Jamie-Lynn regularly performs trademark clearance searches and provides availability opinions, prepares and files trademark applications, and prosecutes trademark applications before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office. She successfully represents clients in proceedings before the Canadian Trademark Opposition Board.
Guillaume Lavoie Ste-Marie is a trusted litigator and trademark agent with extensive experience in copyright, patent, and trademark related matters.
